I've been interested in speculating since being a teen in the late 60's. Let me quickly add: I've been wrong most of the time and have lost precious amounts in stocks and real estate in particular. It took me too long to realize that you need more than a smattering of knowledge and blind luck to succeed at what the pro's and the insiders do.

It's no accident that my very few positive stock speculations were based on inside information, rather than some recommendation from a newsletter, stock broker, or neighbor. Like success in any field, I've learned stock and real estate trading are not for amateurs. In fact, the trading industry eats its amateurs. Now I'm not a victim, except of my own arrogance and ignorance, and have merely bought myself a real-world education. Neither bragging (ha!) or complaining.

My financial successes have come,and there have been some, when not from inside information, after burying myself in a commercial category. The most notable of these has been retail business turnarounds, marketing and team building.

After a strong exposure to libertarian and free market thinking, I took an active interest in precious metals as a hedge against failing currency, hyperinflation. Rand, Hazlitt, Mises, laid some groundwork. Then when Harry Bowne published his first big best-seller, HOW YOU CAN PROFIT FROM THE COMING DEVALUATION, circa 1968, I, and many others he so astutely forwarned, became actively interested in owning gold and silver.

It would be another decade before I was financially positioned to proactively move on this interest. By then the devaluation had happened, as foretold, and we were in the midst of the Carter Administration malaise. I began buying gold and silver. Typical of most of my timing, with a few notable exceptions, I chased the train after it had left the station. So my 'investments', for the short term, were not 'profitable'. There were more reasons to save in this form than short term profitability, but I wasn't ready to be patient, and gradually sold my silver bars and kruggerrands off at a tidy loss.

I took the proceeds and further squandered them, culminating in huge losses during the northeast real crash of 1989. Ultimately I lost my home to foreclosure and enjoyed the second of my life's 3 bankruptcies (I still had a little more to learn...)

A few years ago, spurred by the urgency and discoveries of where 'we were' by such real-world scholars as Glenn Beck, I renewed my interest in gold and silver.

This time, I was working with more knowledge, and, perhaps more importantly, way more maturity. I was no longer looking for the home run. I viewed the acquisition of gold and silver (not that I acquired any, mind you) as great hedges against the economic collapse and civil turmoil to come. If nothing else, I would be protecting my purchase power, while removing assets from 401K's, bank accounts and other things easily accessible to a future desperate government protecting me from my own assets.

I and a few other folks in my age category believed that owning gold and silver would be a prudent thing to do. Certainly not a wealth scheme, but solid sense in the face of the perfect storm headed our way. I tamped down any inclination to anticipate 'profits' by reasoning that the increases in value of these commodities were merely a reflection of the devaluing of the dollar, as the gorverment and fed proceeded to commit global robbery without raising taxes. At least I could hang even with my savings in terms of purchase power.

The 'ah ha' bonus for us, is that the whole rotten to the core scenario of high level corruption via debasement of currency AND temporary suppression of gold and silver prices has a hidden, and substantial dividend.

Prices of anything can only be suppressed temporarily. Human action will unglue any attempt to control the laws of economics everytime. Figuratively, I'm saying that those who are buying gold and silver now, like George Soros, are actually buying 'under market'---like paying 20 cents for today's dollars, and waiting a little while for the water to burst through the dam. You can bet the big boys are not merely trying to save their asses. They smell blood. And those of us peons who are lucky enough to have been taking action for more conservative reasons, just happen to be in for a fat 'windfall' profit. Sometimes we do get lucky.
