"Fish don't know they're wet."
Why do folks get into groups that commit crimes no individual would dare to commit and sleep at night??
How do people in the Mafia sleep at night?
How do cannibals sleep at night?
How do people rob each other, through their government, and sleep at night?
How do Union Leaders rob their constituency and sleep at night?
How do media people conspire to promote their agenda at the expense of informing the public, then sleep at night?
How can 'historians' deliberately distort and erase history and sleep at night?
How can 'educators' preoduce illiterate, ignorant end-products and sleep at night?
How do politicians reverse themselves on a dime to suit the moment, eschewing the honesty and integrity they demand of taxpayers and businessmen, and sleep at night?
How do folks in various interest groups represent others as racists, liars, thieves, ignoramuses, unfeeling, while engaging in the the very things they say they hate, and sleep at night?
Well, there are the human foibles that we are all born with, such as envy, greed, self-hatred, ability to 'rationalize', etc. But that begs the question, why do people do criminal things in groups, that they'd never consider undertaking themselves. Well, another thing we're born with is the desire to belong, in, effect, be part of a tribe. Now I'm not saying anything we all don't already know. But there is another factor that is more environmental than bio-chemical.
A little while back, I heard someone decribe it by saying "Fish don't know they're wet." If we're born into a family bereft of morality and ambition, and go to schools that reward and promote ignorance; if we hang with other folks who are doing the same thing we've 'learned' to do, and see 'experts' in media and celebrities getting away with moral corruption; if we see politicians brazenly reward themselves for their duplicity with lavish lifestyles, covert conflicts of interests, bountiful benefits including their retirement arrangements, and that's all we see; then what are our chances of coming out differently?
Fish don't know they're wet.
Now, do these facts make us unaccountable to ourselves, family and spiritual beliefs? No. Somehow we each have to realize there's a better way, and hopefully we'll help others recognize the same.
A key part of the cure for "Wet-fish syndrome" is to intentionally dissociate from moral corruption and seek out the company of like-minded folks who have escaped this trap. The chances of doing this alone are neglible. We all want to have a social sense of belonging, but we can choose a wholesome environment or a decadent one. It's still us, as individuals, making that choice.
All this brings me to 8/28 in DC. The genius of it all!!!
